T4, New Mexico's biggest production ever!

Albuquerque Studios New Mexico

The state confirmed today that the biggest film ever to shoot in New Mexico will be "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins."

Film industry officials told the Business Weekly last week that a $185 million production would use the railyards in Barelas near downtown Albuquerque. That site, which the city of Albuquerque bought last year, is under scrutiny this week by a panel from the Urban Land Institute, which will make recommendations on the long-term uses of the property on Feb. 29.

The film will star Christian Bale as John Connor. Moritz Borman, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek will produce. The script is by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who also wrote "Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines." The director goes by one name, McG. He has also directed "Charlie's Angles: Full Throttle" and "We Are Marshall."

"Terminator Salvation" will be the first film in a new Terminator trilogy.

The production will be shot on location from May through August in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and other New Mexico locations. Production offices will be based at Albuquerque Studios, where all of the stage work will take place. Albuquerque Studios signed an agreement last week with Union Development Corp. to manage all the film productions using the railyard property.

Being a Terminator film, it's no surprise it is set in a post-apocalyptic future. Director McG said New Mexico represents an arid Western United States, which has the look and feel conducive to creating an American Gothic picture. He also praised the help he has received from state officials.

"This is the story of a man's search for belief in himself and his fellow man," he said in a news release. "It's a long journey and the landscape plays a critical role."

Warner Bros. Pictures is handling all U.S. and Canadian distribution rights for the film, with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group international handling distribution rights in all territories, excluding Korea and select Mideast territories. The Halcyon Co. acquired all Terminator franchise rights last year.

"This is huge for the state's film industry -- the fact that such a big film with a blockbuster reputation has chosen New Mexico speaks volumes," said Gov. Bill Richardson in a prepared statement.

Since Richardson took office, more than 90 major feature films -- including this past Sunday night's Oscar-winning Best Picture, "No Country for Old Men" -- and television projects have been shot in the state, adding $1.5 billion to New Mexico's economy.

In other news...

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired international distribution rights for "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" from the Halcyon Co., the development, production and financing outfit headed by Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek.

This movie marks the first chapter in what is hoped to be a new "Terminator" trilogy. McG will direct "Terminator Salvation" from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris. Christian Bale will star as John Connor.

Moritz Borman, Anderson and Kubicek are producing the film, which is scheduled to begin production this spring.

Sony's rights deal is for all territories, excluding South Korea and select Mideast markets.

"The Sony distribution team is really energized by this opportunity to work with Victor and Derek at the Halcyon Co. in continuing our involvement with the 'Terminator' series," said Peter Schlessel, prexy of worldwide affairs for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Halcyon, which acquired all "Terminator" franchise rights last May, also recently secured first-look rights to the works of sci-fi scribe Philip K. Dick.
