Unglamorous Linda Hamilton happy to act 'and not just be pretty'

Canadian Press, Toronto, Friday October 26th 2007

You just never know who you might run into at a sleazy, Scarborough motel. This week, it was former "Terminator" star Linda Hamilton. She was holed up in one of the seedier corners of Toronto's east end working on the upcoming Canadian police drama "The Weight," coming next fall to the Movie Network and Movie Central.

The series, from acclaimed playwright/producer George F. Walker ("This Is Wonderland"), stars Ron White and Daniel Kash as a pair of conflicted cops trying to clean up their old 'hood. Hamilton plays a boozy grifter with ties to characters on both sides of the law.

The rainy day I arrived on the set, Hamilton was about as far from the glamour of Hollywood as an actress can get. Set dressers had to paint and freshen up the actual suburban motel just to bring it up to a sleazy standard. The motel proprietor fretted that the bright lights and movie folk were scaring away his usual "by the hour" business.

In the scene shooting that day, Hamilton was made up to look battered and bruised, swilling scotch and dropping F-bombs while meeting cop Kash in one of the rundown motel rooms.

"This is a character very few people would let me play," said Hamilton, who 20 years ago starred in the romantic cult series "Beauty and the Beast" after rocketing to fame in the original "Terminator" movie opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I always want to surprise people. I don't want to be Linda Hamilton on film. I want to be every other woman I could possibly think of."

Most casting directors, she feels, remember her ripped abs and pumped physique from the "Terminator" films and see her as a woman in charge who can handle any situation. But playing some sort of "CSI" heroine "spouting the facts for a forensic show" is not a career goal, she says. "I just could so not do that for a living."

Hamilton was lured north to work on "The Weight" thanks to director Gail Harvey, who worked with the actress last year in B.C. on the TV movie "Home by Christmas." And while cramming a cable feature into a 13-day shoot "nearly killed me," says Hamilton, she was eager to work with easygoing-but-in-charge Harvey again.

Besides, a reported $80-million divorce settlement from "Titanic" director James Cameron allows Hamilton to choose projects based on challenge rather than profit. At this age, says the 51-year-old, she's thrilled to be playing a low-class, " under-dressed" character.

"Forget what Hollywood tells you and what perfection is," she says. "I get to be really courageous now and do what I was trained to do - act - and not just be pretty."

Like the other actors on "The Weight," which boasts guest-star turns from Ed Asner and Sharon Lawrence, Hamilton has fallen in love with Walker's edgy, authentic dialogue.

"I'm going to be stalking him from now on," she says.

One thing that was distracting her from the dialogue and everything else were the fires raging this week in Malibu. Hamilton has a home there, although she was assured her place was not in danger. Back home are two teenaged children from two of Hamilton's three marriages.

And although she still gets recognized every day for her previous work - to fans "I'm either Linda (Beauty and the Beast) Hamilton or Linda (Terminator) Hamilton" - she has no connection with the upcoming spinoff series, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," premiering in January on Fox.

Lena Headey ("300") will play Hamilton's former character, Sarah Connor. "I love Lena Headey," says Hamilton, who is happy to "pass the baton" to the English actress. Hamilton feels a "Terminator" series could work. "The fact that (the characters) keep travelling back in time is a premise that could bear a lot of interesting ideas."
